L-Theanine for Anxiety and Depression - Does It Work? Evidence?

L-theanine is a supplement that you can take that has evidence behind it that it will help you reach higher levels of serotonin, dopamine and glycine, and a combination of these increases could help relieve anxiety, reduce stress, and maybe even help some depression. L-theanine is something that is primarily found in green and black tea and some mushrooms, but it's also available in a pill or tablet form. In the image to the right, I've got what I've been taking. This is my bottle of L-theanine. 


It's not expensive. I don't remember how much I spent on it. I heard from a family member about the effectiveness of this, and that it's indicated for stress and anxiety. I thought, I've got to check this out for myself. So I went online. I bought that bottle. I've been taking it for a few months now. I'll be honest with you, my experience with it hasn't been earth shattering. 


I do think at this time in my life, I've got the things that I take for my anxiety. I take L-Methylfolate, which is another supplement I talk about in an article here. I take Prozac, which is an SSRI. I also take magnesium as a lotion. I supplement that and I talk about that in another article here. Between those three things, plus adding this L-theanine, I've been in the best condition of my life. As far as anxiety goes and my overall mental health, I feel great. I have energy. I'm exercising. I'm going to school full time. I'm working. I also have a lot of other stressors in my life, but I'm able to manage, and I'm able to do it and be happy. I'm not miserable doing all these things. I don't really know how much this L-theanine plays a role in how I'm feeling right now, but I know I feel great, and I know it's something that has the evidence behind it, and I'm going to keep taking it. 


I want to talk a little bit about what this does. Like I said, it helps increase your serotonin level, increase your dopamine level, and your Glycine level, but it also increases a protein called brain derived neurotrophic factor, which I talk about a lot in an article here, which helps you learn. Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) helps your brain adapt and make new connections. It helps you learn, but it also plays a role in mental health, which I talk about in that article. It also increases something called nerve growth factor, which, again, is like BDNF, and helps you make new connections in your brain and within your body. Between all these things, there's a lot of good potential behind L-Theanine use. 


“Stress-related symptoms (i.e., depression, anxiety-trait, and sleep) scores decreased and cognitive function (i.e., verbal fluency and executive function) scores improved after four weeks of L-theanine administration. The reduction in sleep quality problems (disturbances in sleep latency, sleep disturbance, and use of sleep medication) was greater in the L-theanine administration compared to the placebo administration.”

It helped with sleep, and it helped with anxiety and depression symptoms. There are some other studies that talk about this as well. But my conclusion is, it's cheap, it's easy to get. I ordered that online on Amazon. I feel great. Don't know how much role it's playing, but there may be people out there who are actually really deficient in this stuff. So a supplement might really help you. It's definitely something to look into. With all supplements, you want to tell your doctor that you're taking it. This is to make sure it doesn't interfere with any other medications that you're taking. 


Always be safe. Stay within the dosage range on these. I believe this one has a fairly high dosage range; it's suggested that you take 200 milligrams of L-Theanine at bedtime. That's what I take is the 200 milligrams. This might be an option for you.

Introduction

Treatment options for anxiety disorders include psychotherapy, medications, or a combination approach. Medications can help relieve anxiety symptoms and improve functioning while also undergoing counseling. Two commonly prescribed anti-anxiety medications are Vistaril and Atarax.


What are Vistaril and Atarax?

Vistaril (hydroxyzine pamoate) and Atarax (hydroxyzine hydrochloride) are both antihistamine medications that are used to treat anxiety and panic disorders. They belong to a class of medications called antihistamines, which work by blocking the effects of histamine in the body.

Histamine is a chemical that's released by the body during an allergic reaction. It causes symptoms like itching, sneezing, and runny nose. Antihistamines like Vistaril and Atarax help relieve these symptoms by preventing histamine from attaching to receptors in the body.

In addition to allergies, Vistaril and Atarax are both FDA-approved for the treatment of anxiety and tension associated with anxiety disorders. They help reduce anxiety by affecting activity in the central nervous system. These medications can provide relief from excessive worry, irrational fears, and compulsive behaviors.

Both Vistaril and Atarax are also used off-label to treat nausea and vomiting. Although they are not FDA-approved for these uses, they are commonly prescribed by doctors to help relieve nausea related to motion sickness, chemotherapy, or surgery.

So in summary, Vistaril and Atarax are very similar antihistamine medications that are used for treating anxiety, allergies, nausea, and vomiting. The main difference between them is in their formulations, which we'll discuss more below.


How Vistaril and Atarax Work in the Body

Vistaril and Atarax work in similar ways to treat anxiety and allergic reactions. The active ingredient in both medications is hydroxyzine, which acts as an antihistamine. This means it blocks the effects of histamine in the body. Histamine is a chemical that's released during allergic reactions and leads to symptoms like itching, sneezing, and hives.

By blocking histamine receptors, hydroxyzine helps relieve allergy symptoms and reduce anxiety. Research shows it can also increase GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) activity in the brain. GABA is a neurotransmitter that has a calming, relaxing effect. Higher GABA activity reduces anxiety, promotes sleep, and helps control fear responses.

So in summary, Vistaril and Atarax work by:

- Blocking histamine receptors to relieve allergy and anxiety symptoms

- Increasing GABA activity in the brain to promote relaxation and reduce anxiety

The antihistamine and GABA-enhancing effects make these medications useful for treating both allergies and anxiety disorders. They have a sedating effect that helps patients feel calmer and more relaxed.


Effectiveness for Anxiety

Both Vistaril and Atarax are useful for treating anxiety symptoms. They work in a similar way by blocking histamine receptors and reducing activity in the central nervous system.

Studies have found both medications can help relieve symptoms like excessive worrying, restlessness, irritability, panic attacks, and trouble sleeping caused by anxiety disorders.

The main difference when it comes to effectiveness is that Vistaril tends to be more sedating. Atarax can cause drowsiness too, but Vistaril has a greater calming and sleep-promoting effect.

Many doctors prescribe Vistaril specifically for anxiety with insomnia or nighttime symptoms, while they may choose Atarax more often for generalized anxiety during the day. The sedating qualities of Vistaril make it better suited for addressing anxiety symptoms that interfere with sleep.

Overall, both medicines are effective options for anxiety. Vistaril may provide an extra level of relief for individuals who have anxiety with sleep difficulties or pronounced nervousness at night. Dosage

For anxiety relief, the starting dosage is often 25 mg two or three times daily. The dosage can be increased every 3-4 days by 25 mg per dose if needed, up to a maximum of 100 mg per dose.

Doctors may prescribe a lower dosage for elderly patients or those with kidney problems, such as 10-25 mg once or twice daily. Children ages 6 months and older are given 0.5 mg per kg of body weight per day, divided into 2-3 doses.

Vistaril and Atarax should be taken with food or milk to minimize stomach upset. The dosage times can be spread evenly throughout the day or taken at bedtime to promote relaxation and sleep. Doctors advise avoiding daytime doses that can cause drowsiness and impair mental alertness.

The time it takes to feel the anti-anxiety effects of Vistaril or Atarax varies by individual. Symptom relief may begin within 30-60 minutes and can last up to 8 hours after taking the medication. Patients will work with their doctor to find the ideal dosage timing and schedule.


Side Effects of Vistaril and Atarax

When comparing the side effects of Vistaril and Atarax, the two medications are very similar. The most common side effects for both drugs include:

**Drowsiness** - Both Vistaril and Atarax can cause drowsiness. However, this side effect may be more pronounced with Atarax, especially when first starting the medication. Vistaril tends to cause less daytime sleepiness.

**Dry mouth** - Dry mouth is commonly reported with both Vistaril and Atarax. This can occur from the anticholinergic properties of the medications. Sipping water and chewing sugarless gum may help.

**Constipation** - Constipation is another possible side effect of Vistaril and Atarax due to their anticholinergic effects. Staying hydrated, eating high fiber foods, and maintaining physical activity can help prevent constipation.

However, the severity and frequency of certain side effects like drowsiness may be slightly less with Vistaril compared to Atarax. - Vistaril and Atarax can be given by intramuscular injection when needed for rapid relief of severe anxiety or agitation.

- The injections are only administered under medical supervision. The typical dose is 25-50 mg.

- Injections provide faster onset of effects compared to oral tablets or capsules.

The different formulations offer flexibility in administration. Patients can work with their doctor to determine the best dosage form based on their preferences and needs.

Both Vistaril and Atarax are available as inexpensive generic medications, making them affordable treatment options for anxiety.
